The Amberra Porcelain collection was created to hold the memory of a companion in something as considered and enduring as the bond it represents. Each urn begins as raw clay and is shaped, fired, and finished by hand over the course of several days. What emerges is a piece defined by material honesty — a pure white surface, a quiet cool weight in the hand, and a beautiful display reminding you of the many beautiful moments your friend has given you.
HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS
Every urn in the collection begins as a fine, white-firing ceramic clay, chosen for its tight, even particle structure and its ability to hold crisp, precise forms. The clay is refined before use to remove impurities that would otherwise show up as speckling or discolouration once fired, which is part of what gives the finished body its clean, consistent whiteness.
Fired at a high temperature, the clay body becomes dense and hard, with very low porosity. This gives each piece a solid, substantial feel in the hand and a surface that holds fine detail well — the basis for the smooth, refined look the collection is known for.
The signature white finish is a ceramic glaze formulated to fire to a bright, even white with a soft, glass-like sheen. Applied to the bisque-fired piece and then fired again, the glaze fuses to the clay body rather than sitting on top of it as paint would, forming a smooth, continuous surface layer.
Because the glaze is applied by hand — typically by dipping or careful spraying — minute variations in thickness are part of every piece. These can show up as faint tonal shifts or a slightly softer sheen in places, and are considered a mark of the process rather than a flaw. No two urns are perfectly identical, in the same way no two hand-finished ceramic pieces ever are.
THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
Preparing the Clay
The clay is carefully prepared and kneaded to remove air pockets and create an even moisture content. This provides a stable foundation for shaping each urn.
Shaping
Each urn is formed using a combination of wheel throwing and moulding techniques, depending on the design. This ensures refined proportions, consistent wall thickness and a carefully balanced form. Lids and any accompanying bases are shaped separately before being fitted to the urn.
Drying and Refining
The shaped pieces are left to dry slowly to minimise internal stresses and prevent cracking. Once dry, each urn is carefully refined by hand, smoothing edges, seams and surface details.
First Firing
After drying, each urn undergoes its first firing. This transforms the clay into a durable ceramic body while leaving the surface ready to receive its glaze.
Applying the Glaze
The ceramic is then coated with a carefully applied white glaze. Every piece is individually inspected and refined to ensure a smooth, even finish before its final firing.
Final Firing
The glazed urn is fired a second time at a significantly higher temperature. During this process, the glaze permanently fuses with the ceramic, creating the dense, smooth and durable surface that defines the Porcelain collection.
Finishing and Inspection
Once cooled, every urn is carefully inspected for surface quality, fit and finish. A protective felt or cork base is applied where appropriate, the lid is checked for a precise fit, and each piece is approved only after passing its final quality inspection.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FINISHED URN
Density and weight: The high-fired ceramic body has very low porosity, giving each urn a solid, substantial feel that is often the first thing people notice when they hold one.
A sealed, easy-care surface: The fused glaze layer is smooth and non-porous, so the surface wipes clean easily and resists absorbing moisture, dust, or fingerprints over time.
Colour stability: The white glaze is fired rather than painted on, so it will not peel, fade, or discolour with ordinary light exposure, and stays true for the life of the piece.
A cool, smooth touch: The glazed surface is glass-smooth to the touch, with a coolness that warms slightly with handling — characteristic of a well-vitrified, high-fired ceramic finish.
Durability with care: While resistant to everyday handling, each urn remains a fired ceramic piece and should be treated accordingly — kept away from hard impacts and cleaned only with a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth.
Quiet individuality: The slight, natural variation left by hand-glazing means each urn carries a subtle character of its own, consistent with the collection's design but never mechanically uniform.
